Overwhelmed by love!

Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pompous. It is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.
1 Cor 12:31—13:13 or 13:4-13

The second reading at Mass yesterday was the beautiful, well-known passage from St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians about love. I am sure we have heard the passage many times. I remember memorizing the verses when I was in school. But over the years we can repeat these verses without really realizing what they are saying to us.

The saints have told us that when we die the one thing we will be judged on is how, during our lifetime, did we love – how did we love God, how did we love others, how did we love ourselves! For most of us we rarely think of death. But it is inevitable. We will be judged because, while God is merciful beyond imagining, He is also just. He is love and since we are made in His image we must grow in his likeness which is to be loving. St. Paul knew this and so he gave us this wonderful passage to help us take stock.

This passage provides a way to examine our conscience – have I been kind today? Have I been rude? Did I lose my temper? Am I brooding over some injury? How did I fail to love today? Or, on a positive note, how did I love today? How did I cooperate with God’s grace to be loving today? If we have failed, ask God’s forgiveness and the grace to try again. If we did well, thank God for His grace which we cannot take for granted.

Imagine what the world would be like if we all took St. Paul's words to heart. If everyone loved in this way, imagine what our own lives would be like - we would be overwhelmed by love!

God is the seeds,
God is the soil,
God is the hands that hold them both.
By showing our love of his creation,
and being friends of the creator,
and protecting his creation,
We please and honour him more than anything else.

It is up to us to produce something fruitful with our lives using our knowlage of the world,
the seeds will give harvest but only if we plant the right ones in the right places,
there is a time and a place and plans to be followed,
some seeds grow weeds that only destroy,
and some are fruitful,
and you discover with time which ones are the good ones that produce lasting permanent rewards.
Patience is always important, and we must be careful to not neglect seeds planted before they
can grow on their own.

He gives us the ability to think so we might know him,
and choose to embrace his creation which is made for us.
Every ray of light is for us.
Every cloud is to water the gardens we like to see,
Everything is to help us know the truth,
everything is useful,
because this God, our father, is a personal God.
It is by knowing God that we know how to grow as we want.
We discover which of God's seeds are fruitful,
and which are useless to us,
and with what we are given we can build as we would like.

The ones who produce works that are pleasing to him are rewarded by him,
because he made us and we know him, and if we are good people then what pleases us also pleases him,
and we are a work too,
and we show that we love our father and love the life he gave us
by building as we know how, and preserving and not destroying.

We protect and preserve his creation and add to it as we think best,
and by doing so we remind people to create for God,
and this is our only way to show friendship towards God,
by mirroring his own benevolence back to him,
and living in harmony with the God by whose eternal laws we live.
