Some gardening hints!

With so much cold weather and snow on the ground here in the east, no one is really thinking about planting seeds. Sometimes I see Spring down the road and since I love gardening I do sometimes get a little “itchy” to buy some seeds.

Today’s Gospel made me think about Spring and planting. It was written by St. Luke and it is the story of Jesus and the parable of the sower and the planting of seeds. (Lk 4:1-20) The sower is God and the seeds He longs to plant in our heart are His words, His message. Jesus reminds us that only good, rich soil can produce good fruit from those seeds.

As I prayed with this Gospel today I wondered what kind of soil was in my heart. Sometimes there is good rich soil and I take God’s words to heart. But too often my soil is ravaged by weeds which choke off the fruit of God’s message. Those weeds are anxieties, distractions, desire for worthless things. God’s word gets choked and I am unable to grow in my life with Him.

Maybe we can take some time today to read the Gospel and honestly examine the soil of our heart. http://www.usccb.org/nab/readings/012710.shtml Let it sift through our fingers, the fingers of Truth so we can discover if we have any weeding to do in our lives. Have we been growing spiritually? Lent is coming; now is a good time to get our spiritual soil ready for the seeds that God wants to plant in our lives this year.
