A famous Doctor

Today is a very special day for our community, the Feast of St. Augustine of Hippo, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. Our community’s rule or Constitution is based on the Rule that St. Augustine wrote for his community around the year 400. It calls us as Sisters to “be of one mind and heart on the way to God.” (photo is of St. Augustine giving his Rule to various Religious communities)

St. Augustine is a giant in the Church, one of its greatest thinkers. Pope Benedict XVI has a great knowledge of his writings and a great devotion to the Saint. St. Augustine’s most famous work is his “Confessions”, the story of his life and his conversion. It is a spiritual classic and well worth reading.

Here are some quotes from his writings and taken from http://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/1121.Augustine_of_Hippo

Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confessions_(St._Augustine)

There is no saint without a past, no sinner without a future

I have read in Plato and Cicero sayings that are wise and very beautiful; but I have never read in either of them: Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden."

Christ is not valued at all, unless he is valued above all."

Right is right even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it. "

""To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek him the greatest adventure; to find him, the greatest human achievement." "

"If you believe what you like in the Gospel, and reject what you don't like, it is not the Gospel you believe, but yourself."

St. Augustine pray for us!
